Use non-toxic solvents to prevent runaway polymerization cost effectively

Brussels, Belgium, 19 July 2021

Solvay announced the successful development of a new generation of emergency polymerization inhibitor phenothiazine LVT ™  2330。 The product aims to quickly inhibit the uncontrolled polymerization of monomers such as acrylic acid, acrylate, methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate in bulk bulk bulk storage facilities, transportation tanks and container tanks. It is now available for the global market.

The heat generated by uncontrolled polymerization reaction due to uncontrollable factors may lead to potential hazards such as fire, explosion or rupture of closed storage and transportation containers, thus putting personnel, property and environment under major risks.

"Solvay's new phenothiazide (PTZ) lvt2330 is a 30% PTZ active solution dissolved in rhodiasolv polarclean HSP 1 solvent, which is one of the components of Solvay's industrial powerful green solvent products." Dave vanzin, Solvay's technical service and development manager, said: "It was developed as an alternative to the solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a fast stop polymerization inhibitor widely used in the United States and the European Union, because NMP has been listed as a substance of high concern (SVHC) by reach."

Solvay's phenothiazine LVT ™  2330 has higher safety and lower freezing point than the solution containing NMP during operation, which is very beneficial to facilities and transportation in cold climate, and its high active PTZ concentration makes it possible to use a small compact device to inhibit emergency polymerization in a cost-effective way.

"We can see that this pioneering emergency polymerization inhibitor containing non-toxic and non-volatile solvents has a huge market demand in acrylic acid, ester, methyl ester and other monomer markets in North America and Europe. In these markets, chemical toxicity has long been concerned by the industry and relevant government departments." Wang Jing, market manager of Solvay Asia Pacific, said: "However, in Asia, emergency polymerization inhibitors have not been widely concerned and accepted by customers in the above monomer industries until recently, and have been adopted as a standard solution to reduce accident risk. Therefore, the Asian market is the most potential. Solvay will work with customers to contribute to the improvement and improvement of safety, health and environmental protection standards."
