• Plastics can often appear pale orange-yellow in sunlight because of absorption of the blue-violet wavelength radiation by impurities and relatively strong reflection of the orange-yellow range. When a small amount of optical brightener is used, the incident UV radiation is absorbed and re-emitted in the visible blue-violet range, counteracting the yellowish tinge.
